History Of The World Cup

The international football group named Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) held its inaugural tournament in 1930. Held every year except 1942 and 1946 when the second world war made play impossible, the FIFA World Cup is held every four years.

Going into 2014, Spain was the reigning champion, Brazil claimed 5 total titles, Italy 4 and Germany 4. It wasn't until 1982 that the tournament expanded to 24 teams, with 32 international entrants allowed in 1998.

This gave Africa, North America, and Asia a chance to take part. In 2013, there was mention of the Caribbean Football Union obtaining a position in the World Cup, and possible expansion to 40 teams, though that has not yet happened.

The FIFA World Cup qualification rounds last for three years, oftentimes recording more than 200 countries entering for qualification into the FIFA World Cup competition. With so many international countries battling for a spot in World Cup competition, the 32 teams which make the cut are truly the top FIFA teams in the world.
